How to create a 3D screw in progecad without helix or sweep command Autocad has.

I have been trying to create a 3D model of a shaft with fins that spiral around the shaft (similar to threads of a screw). In AutoCAD the Helix and Sweep commands were used to do this. ProgeCAD doesn't seem to have similar commands.

I have tried extruding a rectangle, a region, and a closed 3Dpoly (representing the fin) along a spiral path. None of these will extrude, but a circle will extrude along the path.

Any tips are appreciated.

I don't see a way to attach the file though.

Hello Howard,

did you try to open the progeCAD Add-on > iCADLib menu?
The iCADLib dialog box will display,
select the Traceparts icon and specify the folder where to download the Traceparts required elements.
After that right-click the Add-on > iCADLib > Traceparts icon and select the first option: Traceparts by progeCAD. The Traceparts website will open, here you will be able to find milions of blocks. Part of the available elements list is for mechanical components.

Another solution to have the required element could be to follow these steps:

1. Draw a circle and trim half of it
2. Extrude the required element along the circle's half
3. Mirror the created element
4. Rotate the two elements in opposite directions, this way you have a rotation of a spiral.

Please let me know if you need further information. Thank you.

Best Regards

Thanks progeCAD for your reply.

ProgeCAD 2010 does not show "iCADLib" in the Add-on. I have downloaded the Mechanics library but there isn't any 3D that I would need.

I've been trying your suggested approach of trimming a circle, extruding along it, mirror, etc. The ends of the extruded objects don't not match to create a continuous spiral. I wish I could attach my cad drawing for you (and others on the forum)to see.

Here is a link showing a worm screw similar to what I want to draw in progeCAD.

On the left menu go to 'Mechanical Systems' then 'Gears' -> 'Gears and Worm Screws' -> scroll to bottom and open 'Hollow shaft worms...'

What I'm drawing has a shaft diameter of 1.25" and O.D. of screw is 2.94".
