How can I draw a polyline using point numbers without knowing the numbers in advance?

Under dppoints there is "Draw by Point No.", but you apparently have to know the whole list of points in advance.  I need to be able to enter the points one at a time.  Do I have to write on paper the order of points and then enter that series with commas?  There needs to be a way to type 19, enter, 17, enter, 20, enter, etc. as I zoom in and determine what point is next.  Am I missing something?

To use the command "Draw by point No.", the user would need to know the point numbers.

However, if you set your object snap to "node" and issue the "polyline" (pline) command, you can select nodes of points as you zoom and pan around the drawing.
