Can not delete solid face

When I create a pyramid with a 3D solid, then go to Modify/Solid/Delete Face I get the followinf F2 error

[Extrude/Move/Rotate/Offset/Taper/Delete/Copy/coLor/mAterial/Undo/eXit] <eXit>: _delete
Select faces or [Undo/Remove]:  1 face(s) found.
Select faces or [Undo/Remove/ALL]:
Modeling Operation Error.

Do I need to convert the solid to something else before editing. I have 20+ years of 3ds Max and this is baffling me.  WIN7 32bit

I believe it will need to be a surface model, not a solid. If you think about the operation in the real world, take a pyramid and take a face off the solid, it's impossible. You would be removing the solid material that ran throughout the pyramid. Not sure if that makes sense or not. It has no way of knowing what material needs to be removed. If you do that same with a surface model however, the operation is just removing the surface of one face of the pyramid, thus it has 3 other faces that are left behind.

You'd think if that same face can be extruded (it works) it could also be deleted . Think of taking off the top of a carboard box.

As I am demoing this software, I need to know if this is my error, or there is a bug.

I'm taking the silence as "No you can not delete faces of solid models".
